Admissions Presenter

Dr. Emma Simmons, M.D., M.P.H., is a clinical professor and senior associate dean of student affairs at the UC Riverside School of Medicine. In addition, she practices medicine at the Access Clinic at Riverside University Health System - Medical Center. As senior associate dean, Simmons provides leadership for the medical school's initiatives in student recruitment, admissions, financial aid, academic enrichment, pathway programs, student well-being and career counseling.

After earning her B.S. in chemistry from Tougaloo College, she went on to earn her M.D. and M.P.H. degrees at Brown University. She completed her residency in family medicine at the Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island.

Simmons is a member of the American Academy of Family Practitioners.

Morning Keynote Conversation Moderator: Medical School and Residency

Dr. Paul Lyons, M.D. is senior associate dean for education and chair of the Department of Family Medicine at the University of California, Riverside School of Medicine. As senior associate dean of education, he is responsible for all curricular programs leading to the M.D. degree including curriculum planning, development, management and evaluation, faculty recruitment, appointment, development and evaluation, development and oversight of the Office of Educational Development, student progress and promotion.  As chair of family medicine, he provides leadership for administration of the family medicine program, including faculty recruitment, faculty development and mentoring, and education and scholarly activities.

Lyons earned a B.A. in philosophy from Oberlin College before attending medical school at Ohio State University. He conducted his residency in family medicine and community health at the University of Minnesota.

Luncheon Keynote  

Dr. Thomas Haider, M.D. earned his Bachelor and a Master of Arts degree in Biology from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Subsequently, he received his medical degree from Loyola University, Stritch School of Medicine. He then completed his residency in orthopedics as well as the fellowship training in spine surgery at the University Of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, Colorado.

Dr. Haider is Chief of the Spine Division at Riverside County Regional Medical Center and the Chairman of the Biomedical Advisory Board of UCR/UCLA Thomas Haider Program in Biomedical Sciences. Dr. Haider and his wife Salma, are co-founders of the Children’s Spine Foundation, a charity focused on securing early intervention and treatment of spinal disorders for children without financial means.

Dr. Haider has developed and patented a surgical instrumentation for the use in spinal surgery. Royalties from the Haider/UCR Pedicle Instrumentation has been donated to the University of California, Riverside to aid in the development of their Medical School program. He is currently on the Clinical Faculty at the University of California, Riverside.

 

 

HPAC Presentation

Health Professions Advising Center Presenter

Charles Scruggs, M.A. is the Director of the Health Professions Advising Center (HPAC). He works closely with the campus community to identify needs and to serve as an advocate for students on the road to pursuing a career in the health professions. 

In addition, he works closely with the Western Association of Advisers for the Health Professions (WAAHP) and the National Association of Advisers for the Health Professions (NAAHP) to stay up to date on best practices and changes within the health professions field. 

Since 2004, Charles has worked in higher education with experiences in admissions, academic and pre-professional advising, student conduct, and residence life. He enjoys working on a college campus and believes it is a privilege to be here at UCR.
